Free Things to Do in North Norfolk

North Norfolk is full of wonderful places to explore, and the best part is that many of them are completely free. From wide open beaches and coastal walks to charming market towns and nature-rich countryside, there’s no shortage of things to see and do without spending a small fortune.

Whether you’re visiting for a short break or enjoying a longer holiday at Deer’s Glade, here are some of the best free things to do in North Norfolk to help you make the most of your time in this beautiful part of the county.

Explore the Beautiful North Norfolk Coast

One of the biggest draws of the area is the North Norfolk coastline, much of which can be enjoyed completely free of charge. Miles of sandy beaches, big skies and coastal paths make it perfect for relaxed days outdoors.

We recommend Sheringham and Cromer if you're looking for a classic seaside town experience. Both offer traditional promenades, sandy beaches and plenty of family-friendly atmosphere, making them great choices for children.

For excellent sandy beaches that are often a little quieter, Overstrand and Mundesley are brilliant options.

Dog owners will be pleased to know that East Runton Beach (just west of Cromer) is dog-friendly all year round, making it a popular spot for visitors travelling with dogs. If you're planning a holiday with your four-legged companion, our guides to Dog-friendly Camping, Glamping and Caravan Holidays and Touring holidays with Dogs may also be useful.

If you’re happy to travel a little further along the coast, Blakeney and Wells-next-the-Sea offer beautiful coastal scenery close to the charming market town of Holt.

And a little further on is the breathtaking Holkham Beach, often described as the place where 'sky meets the sea'. With miles of open sand and dunes, it’s one of the most spectacular beaches in the UK. It’s also known for the annual visit of the Household Cavalry, typically early July, who bring their horses to swim along the shoreline.

If you're travelling with dogs, it’s also worth checking the seasonal dog restrictions on certain beaches, as some have limits during the summer months.

Discover Scenic Coastal and Countryside Walks

Walking is one of the best free ways to experience North Norfolk.

The Norfolk Coast Path stretches for around 84 miles between Hunstanton and Hopton-on-Sea, passing through salt marshes, sandy beaches and coastal villages. You don’t need to walk the entire route - many visitors simply explore shorter sections for a scenic day out.

There are also many peaceful countryside walks nearby. Woodland trails, riverside paths and quiet lanes make the area perfect for relaxed exploring.

Visit the Charming Towns and Villages

Another great free activity is simply exploring the towns and villages of North Norfolk.

The Georgian market town of Holt is a favourite for a wander, with its flint buildings, independent shops and relaxed atmosphere.

Nearby, Burnham Market is often nicknamed “Chelsea-on-Sea” thanks to its stylish boutiques, galleries and cafés.

The picturesque coastal village of Blakeney is also well worth visiting. Walk along the historic quay, watch boats come and go or simply enjoy the views across the marshes.

Wildlife and Nature Spotting

North Norfolk is a fantastic place for wildlife lovers, and spotting animals in their natural habitat is completely free.

The coastal marshes and nature reserves are home to a wide variety of birdlife, including warblers, wheatears and marsh harriers. In the late afternoon, you may even spot barn owls hunting across the grazing marshes.

Seals can often be seen along the coast, particularly around Blakeney Point, which is one of the largest grey seal colonies in England.

Even closer to Deer’s Glade, you may see wildlife around the park itself, including deer in the surrounding woodland and a variety of birds around the lake.

Enjoy the Simple Seaside Traditions

Sometimes the best holiday memories come from the simplest activities.

Spend an afternoon crabbing on the quay at Wells-next-the-Sea, rent a beach hut and build sandcastles on the beach, fly a kite along the coast or simply sit and watch the boats in the harbour.

Another favourite activity for families is rock pooling at West Runton Beach. At low tide the beach reveals fascinating rock pools where children can look for small crabs, shrimps, sea anemones and other tiny sea creatures. It’s a fun and free way to discover coastal wildlife up close.

In Cromer and Sheringham you’ll find local festivals and events taking place throughout the year.

In early July, Sheringham’s Potty Festival brings dozens of Morris dancing teams to the town, filling the streets with music and performances before a lively parade through the centre. Later in the year, the much-loved Sheringham 1940s Weekend transforms the town with vintage vehicles, wartime music, period dress and nostalgic celebrations, often supported by the nearby North Norfolk Railway.

Over in Cromer, the Cromer Crab & Lobster Festival in May celebrates the town’s fishing heritage with seafood, cooking demonstrations and stalls along the seafront. The lively Cromer Carnival in August is one of the biggest events in North Norfolk, featuring a carnival parade, funfair rides, fireworks and spectacular air displays along the coast.

These classic seaside traditions have been enjoyed here for generations and remain some of the most memorable ways to spend time in North Norfolk.
