The North Norfolk coast is well known for having a mixture of Cretaceous fossils, such as echinoids, belemnites and brachiopods, and Quaternary deposits yielding the bones of Ice Age mammals. The most well-known location for fossil hunting is West Runton.
Famous for its cliffs which house lots of fossils and even a fossilized steppe mammoth, West Runton rock pools which are part of the chalk cliffs, also provide great fun for hunting winkle, shore crab, prawns, beadlet anemones, the common hermit crab, and lots more.
We’d recommend appropriate rock-pooling beach shoes and you'll need to check out appropriate tidal times.
